Ministry to Adults and Families

Family Ministry at University Baptist isn’t found just in the programs we offer, but in everything we do! We exist to strengthen and support congregational families as well as individuals of all ages that are members of our family of faith. Support is given to building families that are growing together, worshiping together, and serving together.

Back Door Coffee House

University Baptist Church has served as the host of the monthly Back Door Coffeehouse since 1992 and continues to co-sponsor this prose/poetry/music experience along with the South Mississippi Writing Project of the University of Southern Mississippi. Local writers, musicians, and poets are featured in an intimate and relaxed candlelight and coffee atmosphere on the first Friday of every month from 7:30 – 9:30P.M. There is no charge for admission though donations for soft drinks, candy, coffee, etc. are appreciated.

Periodically, various nationally known musicians and performers are secured by donations from patrons for special concerts to promote this unique artistic venue to a larger audience. Such recording artists as Kate Campbell and Pierce Pettis have graced our stage in recent months though we are also proud to promote the talents of our own region’s musicians and writers. Performers often portray a wide variety of ideas and styles. In supporting the open and honest artistic expression of our neighbors there will at times be some readings neither intended nor appropriate for children. Should this present a conflict for young parents, we can provide a staffed nursery on the church grounds during the performance if we are given appropriate notice in the week before the coffeehouse.

If you wish to be included in the monthly Back Door e-mail messages, please e-mail us at Coffeehouse51@yahoo.com. We open the back doors of the fellowship hall at 7:30 and light the candles.

Bring a friend or come makes some new ones. We look forward to seeing you at the Back Door.

Craig Ratliff Bible Study

Formed in the early 1980s, and led by Bennie Crockett, this opportunity for in-depth Bible study meets Sunday afternoons at 5:00 p.m. in the Church Parlor from the Sunday after Labor Day through the end of May. Conducted in a lecture-discussion format, the group studies different Biblical books and topics as well as classical historical and theological texts and topics.

Winter Bible Study

Late January each year, UBC invites a noted teacher/scholar to lead an informal study. Most sessions are held in the evenings and combined with a meal at the church. Recent sessions have been led by Chuck Poole of Northminster Baptist, Jackson, MS, Alan Culpepper, McAfee School of Theology, Mercer University, Atlanta, GA; and Chuck Bugg, White Divinity School, Gardner-Webb University, Boiling Springs, NC.

Prime Timers

We have rich opportunities for our senior adults to be involved in the life of UBC.

Quarterly Primetimers Luncheons offer fellowship as well as opportunities to learn about a variety of topics through guest speakers and presentations. Outings to local restaurants and day trips are planned throughout the year.

Library/Media Center

The Library Media Center is a vital part of the ministry program of our church. Our goal is to meet the needs of each age group and program of the church while providing materials that enrich, educate, encourage, entertain and inform.

A collection of over 5000 volumes (fiction, non-fiction, children’s books, biographies, videos, and DVDs) is available for the use of church members and friends of the library. The collection is funded through the church budget and thoughtful donations of members and friends in memory or honor of loved ones. The Library Media Committee reviews and oversees all additions to the Library Media Center collection.

We take great pride in our library. There are books from light hearted Christian humor to books deep with theology. The library is computerized and user- friendly. Check it out!

BBB Bunch

The Brown Bag Bible Bunch, a Bible study and mission prayer group, meets Wednesdays at the church at noon (except during June) for an hour of fellowship, prayer for missionaries and other concerns and Bible study. Participants bring a brown bag lunch. Tea and coffee are provided. The group has been known, from time to time, to share "tall tales" and lots of laughter!
