UBC Welcomes New Senior Pastor!
On Sunday, August 28, 2011, University Baptist Church, called the Rev. Paul Russell "Rusty" Edwards as the church's senior pastor. Edwards accepted the call and will begin his ministry at the church on October 3, 2011.
A native of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Edwards most recently has served as associate minister of First Baptist Church, Henderson, North Carolina. After attending Samford University for two years in Congregational Studies, he transferred to Carson-Newman College where he graduated magna cum laude with a major in religion and a minor in Oxford Studies after completing Baptist history research at Regent's Park College, Oxford University.
While at Carson-Newman, Rusty served as the Minister of Missions and Children at First Baptist Church, Sweetwater. From Carson-Newman, Rusty and his wife Jenny moved to Waco, Texas, where he earned a Master of Divinity degree with a major in theology from the George W. Truett Theological Seminary, Baylor University.
After graduating from Truett, Rusty and Jenny moved to Durham, North Carolina, where Rusty earned a Master of Theology degree in Liturgy and Christian Formation, from the Divinity School, Duke University. In 2006, he became the Minister of Christian Formation at First Baptist Church, Henderson, North Carolina, and since 2009, he has served the Henderson church as the Associate Minister.
During his ministry at Henderson, Rusty entered Truett Seminary's Doctor of Ministry program, and is completing the degree in preaching and church leadership. His D.Min. project focuses on congregants' memory of the biblical story in their Christian experience.
Rev. Edwards's calling is "to pastor a moderate Baptist congregation rooted in the larger Christian tradition, committed to the work of worship, and active in the mission of Christ." University Baptist Church heartily welcomes Rusty, Jenny, and Addison as the church seeks to continue its ministry in Hattiesburg and beyond.
Established in 1959, University Baptist Church's purpose is, "through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, to assemble and worship God, to love and encourage one another, to proclaim the gospel of Christ, to minister to all people, and to live in peace." Throughout its history, the church has been blessed by the ministries of seven former pastors: Rev. Harold Kitchings, Dr. Graham Hales, Dr. Craig Ratliff, Dr. G. Avery Lee, Dr. Stephen Odom, Dr. Richard Allison, and Dr. Phillip Reynolds.
