Greetings from the Pastor:
Thank you for your interest in University Baptist church. We want you to know as much as you can about us. We hope you will consider the possibility that this may be your kind of church, one you will want to be a part of and journey with us as we strive to live the Life of Christ together.
There are many
good churches in the Hattiesburg area and each has its own uniqueness. May I
share what I think makes University Baptist unique? Many would call us moderate
Baptist but we prefer to be called open. We are theologically diverse,
with an uncompromising commitment to the Lordship of Jesus Christ in our lives
as individuals and as a church fellowship. We are racially and culturally
diverse. We hold fast to the cherished Baptist doctrine of the priesthood of
all believers, and we do mean all: male and female, young and old. Everyone
counts, everyone participates, and leadership roles are open to all, for
you are all one in the body of Christ (Galatians 3:28).
Because we are diverse we offer a wide range of Sunday School classes designed to meet the needs of anyone and everyone who might walk through our doors. We have in-depth and challenging Bible classes offered by professors of religion from our nearby colleges. We have classes for couples and single-gender classes, too. We offer discussion groups and lecture formats, and innovative teaching styles that fit the desires of learners. Each of our classes is different and there is a place for you!
You will find a wonderfully warm and caring fellowship at UBC. The members genuinely enjoy one another’s company. One of our most meaningful times together is our Wednesday night fellowship meal. It is prepared covered dish style by our members and offered at no charge. We eat and laugh and talk together. Following the meal we pray and study the Bible together. Our children and youth have their own programs at this time as they study the Bible, current issues they face in school and at home, and learn about Baptist missions programs all over the world.
One of my favorite times at University Baptist is Sunday morning worship. Our worship style is marked by reverence and holiness. We truly believe that we are in the presence of God when we gather for worship. Our music, led by Dr. Tom Porter, is quite simply the best I have ever experienced in church. I am committed to preaching Biblically based sermons that encourage us as we wrestle honestly with the Word of God and God’s claims upon our lives.
Another aspect of UBC is our commitment to missions. We take seriously the call of Jesus Christ to go to the remotest parts of the earth. We are active in mission projects here in Hattiesburg as well as abroad. There is a place of service here for anyone desiring to carry on the work that Christ began.
Come and worship with us, study the Bible with us, eat and pray and learn and sing and serve with us. Come and see UBC.
